Suzuki Alto & Mehran Used Buying Guide Pakistan — What to Check
Pakistan's favourite budget and first cars — unbeatable fuel economy and cheap, everywhere-available parts. But small cars hide huge city mileage, cheap accident repairs and tired AGS gearboxes. Here's exactly what to check before you buy.

Alto or Mehran — which fits you?
Suzuki Alto (2019–present)
660cc · VX / VXR / VXL · AGS autoPakistan's top-selling small car — superb fuel economy and cheap parts. The big check is the AGS automatic (auto-gear-shift): test for harsh or hesitant shifts, as a worn clutch actuator is the main cost.
Suzuki Mehran (until 2019)
800cc · VX / VXR (EFI later models)Discontinued, very cheap, and dead simple to maintain — but old, no airbags, weak AC and prone to rust. Prefer the later EFI models over carburettor ones, and inspect the body carefully.
Common Alto & Mehran problems to check
AGS automatic jerks or hesitates (Alto auto)
The AGS is an automated manual, so some shift "nod" is normal — but harsh banging, long hesitation or a slipping feel points to a worn clutch or failing actuator. This is the single most expensive Alto repair, so test the auto thoroughly on a drive.
Odometer tampering
Small cars rack up huge city mileage and get used as ride-hailing/learner cars. Cross-check the odometer against pedal, steering and seat wear — a "low-km" Alto is often anything but.
Weak AC cooling
Both Alto and Mehran have small AC systems that struggle in Lahore summers when neglected. Test cooling at idle and on the move — re-gassing or a compressor is a real cost.
Body rust & accident repair (especially Mehran)
Check door bottoms, wheel arches, boot floor and chassis legs for rust and filler. Mehrans are old and were rarely garaged; Altos are light and easy to crash-repair cheaply.
Tired suspension & steering
Knocking over bumps, a bouncy ride or vague steering means worn shocks, bushes or link rods. Cheap to fix but useful for negotiating the price.
Engine oil burning & leaks
On high-mileage examples check for blue smoke on a hard rev, oil leaks, and that the engine idles smoothly without rattling.
Used Alto / Mehran pre-purchase checklist
Engine
- Cold-start — smooth idle, no rattle or knock
- No blue/white smoke from the exhaust on a rev
- No oil leaks; correct oil level and colour
- Timing chain not noisy (rattle on start-up)
- No check-engine light
Tip: Start the engine stone-cold — a warm small engine hides starting and smoke issues.
Transmission (very important on Alto AGS)
- AGS auto: shifts without harsh banging or long hesitation
- No slipping or revving without acceleration
- Manual: clean clutch bite, no gear grinding
- Smooth take-off on a slight incline
- No grinding or whine from the gearbox
Tip: A faulty AGS actuator is the costliest Alto repair — never skip the drive on an automatic.
Body & Structure
- Rust check: door bottoms, arches, boot floor, chassis legs
- Even panel gaps and consistent paint thickness
- No filler or weld marks from accident repair
- Straight front structure
- Doors, bonnet and boot close cleanly
Tip: On a Mehran, rust and filler matter more than anything mechanical.
Suspension, Brakes & Tyres
- Bounce test each corner for worn shocks
- No knocking bushes/links over speed breakers
- Brakes firm, car stops straight
- Tyres evenly worn
- Steering centred without excessive play
Tip: Uneven tyre wear is a cheap clue to suspension or alignment problems.
Interior, AC & Documents
- AC cools strongly at idle and on the move
- Windows, locks, wipers and lights all work
- No flood-damage signs or damp smell
- Genuine mileage vs physical wear
- Registration, file and token tax clear and original
Tip: Verify documents and genuine mileage before paying — CarOK checks both.

Alto & Mehran — Frequently Asked Questions
What should I check before buying a used Suzuki Alto?
On the AGS automatic, test the gearbox carefully — harsh or hesitant shifts mean a worn clutch actuator, the costliest Alto repair. Also verify genuine mileage, AC cooling, suspension condition and that the body has no accident repair. A CarOK inspection covers all of this.
Is the Suzuki Alto AGS automatic reliable?
It is reliable when maintained, but it is an automated manual, so some shift movement is normal. Harsh banging, slipping or long hesitation points to a worn clutch or actuator. Always test the AGS on a real drive before buying.
Is a used Suzuki Mehran worth buying in Pakistan?
A Mehran is the cheapest way into a car with very low running costs, but it is old, has no airbags and rusts. If you buy one, prefer a later EFI model and inspect the body and AC carefully — mechanically they are simple to fix.
Should I inspect a small car like the Alto before buying?
Yes — small cars often have very high hidden mileage and cheap accident repairs. A CarOK inspection (PKR 2,500 – 5,000) checks the engine, AGS transmission, body, mileage and documents, with an AI risk score, at your location in Lahore.
